X-Women clinch first round playoff bye with win over Tommies
Three-goal second period powers tight 3-2 win for X-Women over Tommies, clinching first-round playoff bye
ANTIGONISH, NS - A three-goal second period powered a tight 3-2 win for the STFX X-Women over the visiting St. Thomas Tommies on Saturday afternoon at the Charles V Keating Centre. STFX, winners of their last seven games, clinched a first-round playoff bye with the win.
STFX defender Terryn Mozes got the Gabriel Pizza Player of the Game nod, while the second and third stars went to fellow defense Kya Moss and Vivian Hinch.
X-Women goalie Brooklyn Oakes made a nifty blocker save in the middle of the evenly played opening period, while Katie Sweeney was strong in the St. Thomas net.
STFX opened the scoring early in the second period, with Claire Carruthers tipping in her second goal of the weekend after a point shot from Mozes.
The Tommies knotted things up halfway through the middle period, with Lauren Smith knocking in a loose puck after a point shot from Amber Daley on the powerplay. St. Thomas pulled ahead almost two minutes later, with Megan Kirkpatrick capitalizing on an odd-player rush.
STFX rookie Toby Graham tied things up again two minutes before intermission, one timing a centering pass from Laci Boyd.
Samantha Morrison put STFX ahead a minute later, putting one five on a breakaway after a steal and stretch pass from Mackenzie Lothian.
The Tommies looked dangerous on a late powerplay in the third period and pulled Sweeney in the final minutes in hopes of tying things up but couldn't get another goal past Oakes.
The X-Women close out their regular season on the road next weekend, beginning with a Friday night game in Charlottetown against the UPEI Panthers at 7 pm. The Tommies return home to tangle with the Dalhousie Tigers next Friday, also at 7 p.m.
Prior to the game, X-Women Head Coach Ben Berthiaume recognized the graduating fourth year student-athletes including Ashlyn Garnett, Vivian Hinch, Kya Moss, Terryn Moses, Bianca Zak, along with student therapist Kianna Ly. Amaya Giraudier and Landyn Pitts are fifth year student-athletes also moving on from the X-Women program.
