Fredericton, NB – The STFX X-Men fell 4-1 to the UNB REDS Friday night in AUS action at the Aitken Centre.
UNB opened the scoring at 8:42 of the first period as Cody Morgan deposited the puck off a 2-on-1 with Cole Huckins. The 1-0 lead held through 20 minutes as the REDS outshot the X-Men 11-7 in the opening frame.
X-Men captain Logan Chisholm evened the game at 12:57 of the second period, tipping in a shot from Antonino Pugliese after Mark Woolley did a nice job of keeping the puck inside the blue line.
The REDS regained the lead late in the period as Morgan netted his second of the game, this time on the power play off a one-timer from Luca D'Amato.
UNB went up 4-1 thanks to a pair of third period goals scored 23 seconds apart. Jax Dubois scored first at 11:08, then Camaryn Baber put in a rebound at 11:31.
Dominik Godin had a great scoring chance for STFX with three minutes left in the game, ringing one off the post, but that was as close as X would come as the REDS held on for the win.
The home team outshot the White and Blue by a 39-22 margin as Patrick Leaver was tagged with the loss in the STFX net, posting 35 saves.
The X-Men are back in action Saturday night when they travel to Charlottetown to take on the UPEI Panthers.
