ANTIGONISH, NS - The UNB REDS overpowered the short staffed STFX X-Men 5-1 in AUS men's hockey action on Friday night at the Charles V Keating Centre. Patrick Leaver had a busy night for the home side, turning aside 46 shots.
The REDS opened the scoring 11 seconds into the game after going shorthanded, as Camaryn Baber roofed a pass from Braeden MacPhee.
Matt Cato looked to even the score on a breakaway seven minutes later, but UNB goalie Remi Delafontaine came up with the save.
The REDS made it 2-0 five minutes before intermission, with Michael Petezian finishing off a coast to coast rush with the score, followed by Cole Huckins roofing a pass from Eli Barnett for a three goal advantage.
Cato got the X-Men on the board four minutes into the second, with Matt Cato one-timing a slot pass from Connor Roberts.
Stuart Rolofs added a powerplay marker for the REDS two minutes into the third period, knocking one in a rebound chance after some nice passing from the visitors.
Huckins rounded out the scoring with 40 seconds left, scoring his second of the night as he picked up 1st star honours.
UNB's Barnett was the second star of the game, with STFX goal scorer Cato the third star.
It's a quick turnaround for the X-Men, who next see action Saturday, November 1, when they host the UPEI Panthers at 1 p.m.
The REDS head to Halifax to take on the Dalhousie Tigers, also at 1 p.m. Saturday night.
