Sackville, NB – The U SPORTS No. 4 ranked X-Women Hockey team defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 5-2 Friday night in AUS action.
Player of the Game Claire Carruthers scored two goals in the X-Women win.
STFX opened up the scoring at 15:19 of the first period as Sam Morrison picked up a puck in the slot from Carruthers and beat Mounties netminder Skye MacDonald.
Tea Pearce made it a 2-0 STFX lead just 18 seconds into the second period on a nice effort to advance the puck down the wing then beat MacDonald with a low shot.
At 13:38 of the second Toby Graham scored the third X goal of the night, taking a feed from Jerika Spry and wristing it in.
Early in the third period, Carruthers scored on the power play, with Bree MacPherson setting up the play.
The Mounties responded with a power play goal of their own at 3:38 from Samantha Taylor.
Carruthers then tallied her second of the night at the nine-minute mark after Morrison dug the puck out in the corner and delivered it to her in the slot as she was left alone in front of the Mounties net.
Taylor scored her second goal of the game with 2:54 left in the game to round out the scoring.
Shots were 36-20 in favor of the X-Women as Brooklyn Oakes earned the win in the STFX net with 18 saves on the night.
The same two teams will be back in action on Sunday afternoon in Antigonish. Puck drop is 3:00 pm at the STFX Keating Centre.
