X-Women shutout Huskies 6-0
X-Women within one point of the AUS top spot after important 6-0 win over Huskies
ANTIGONISH- The STFX X-Women are within one point of the AUS top spot after an important 6-0 win over the Saint Mary's Huskies on Friday night at the Charles V Keating Centre.
STFX forward Tea Pearce earned Gabriel Pizza Player of the Game honors with a two-point night, while Laci Boyd and Lainey Joyce picked up the second and third stars, respectively, with each contributing a goal and an assist.
The Huskies came out of the gate hot in the first period, forcing a handful of saves from STFX netminder Brooklyn Oakes in the opening minutes. The play evened out from there, but things remained scoreless heading into the second period.
The X-Women got on the board halfway through the middle stanza, with Ireland McCloskey getting a tip on a Bree MacPherson point shot.
Pearce added another 30 seconds later, one-timing a pass from Landyn Pitts while on the rush.
Toby Graham made it 3-0 five minutes later, tucking one home after a set up saucer pass from Pearce.
STFX added three more in the third, also in under seven minutes. STFX defender Joyce potted one from the point after a Boyd faceoff win at the 10-minute mark.
Boyd struck next five minutes later, knocking in a rebound after a shot from Joyce.
Alexis Perry rounded out the scoring with a highlight reel backhand to the top corner, making it a 6-0 game.
Oakes made 19 saves on the way to a shutout win. Sophie Scully had 21 saves for Saint Mary's.
The X-Women return to home ice tomorrow, January 24, when they host the Dalhousie Tigers. SMU is on the road again tomorrow when they visit the Mount Allison Mounties. Both games are set for a 7 p.m. start.
