FREDERICTON, NB – The STFX X-Women picked up an exciting 2-1 win in a shootout over the UNB REDS Saturday afternoon in a battle of the top two teams in Atlantic University Sport's women's hockey.
X-Women forward Samantha Morrison netted the only goal in the shootout to secure the win. She also scored the only X goal in regulation, picking up the game's second star accolade.
For two periods, goaltending and defence dominated and the teams were scoreless late in the third.
At the 15:19 mark of the third, Morrison scored to give the X-Women a 1-0 lead.
Then with 1:28 to play and the REDS on the powerplay, Olivia Eustace potted the tying goal.
Overtime solved nothing and Morrison made good with the shootout winner, giving STFX the victory.
Player of the game and first star Brooklyn Oakes made 26 saves on 27 shots to earn the win in the X net, while Cassie McCallum made 14 saves on 16 shots for UNB and was named third star.
With the shootout loss, the REDS (15-4-0-1) still earned a single point and maintain first place atop the AUS standings. Their 31 points on the season gives them a one point edge over the second place X-Women (15-5-0-0).
The REDS are back in action on Wednesday night when they visit UPEI for a 7:00pm faceoff.
The X-Women are at home to Saint Mary's on Friday, also at 7:00 pm.
