ANTIGONISH, NS - In a battle of the top two teams in the AUS women's hockey conference, the STFX X-Women came out with the win, dropping the UNB REDS by a 5-1 score. The victory marks the fourth in a row for STFX, who are now tied for first in the AUS along with UNB.
Gabriel Pizza Player of the Game Brooklyn Oakes finished the game with 21 stops, while Cassie McCallum had 28 at the other end for UNB.
Laci Boyd opened the scoring for the Blue and White midway through the first period, tipping home a point shot from Terryn Mozes.
Second star Alexis Perry made it 2-0 early in the second period, wristing one low from the slot after a pass from Tea Pearce.
Claire Carruthers added another 10 minutes later, ripping one top shelf from the faceoff dot after a pass from Ireland McCloskey.
The X-Women pressed for another marker early in the third, and it was third star Mackenzie Lothian who hit paydirt, cutting to the net and going top shelf after a turnover in the UNB end.
Oakes continued her strong play in the X net, while McCallum stayed busy for the REDS.
The visitors got on the board 10 minutes into the third, with Avery Thurston firing one through traffic while STFX was on a delayed penalty.
McCloskey added another for STFX four minutes later, capitalizing on a wide-open chance with Toby Graham getting the assist.
The X-Women next host the St. Thomas Tommies on Saturday, November 15, at 7 p.m.
