Halifax, NS – The Dalhousie Tigers got out to an early lead and held off the defending AUS champion STFX X-Women on route to a 3-1 win Saturday night as STFX start the AUS season on a losing note.
The X-Women trailed 2-0 after the first period as the Tigers scored two quick goals in the opening three minutes of the game. Their first came from Lexie Small, followed by Emmerson Gormley on the power play.
The second period was scoreless, despite the X-Women outshooting the Tigers 20-11 through 40 minutes of play.
STFX finally got on the board midway through the third period when Isabella Mariano pounced on a rebound after a Lainey Joyce shot. The goal was the first of her STFX career.
The X-Women pulled goaltender Brooklyn Oakes from the crease with 1:49 left to play but Jill Imeson potted an empty net goal for DAL, giving them the 3-1 victory.
Final shots were 35-14 for the X-Women.
STFX will be back on the ice on Friday, October 10th when they host UPEI in their home opener. Puck drop is 7:00 pm at the Keating Centre.
