Antigonish, NS – The StFX X-Women picked up another win Tuesday night as they shutout the Mount Allison Mounties 6-0 at the Charles V. Keating Centre. Four of the goals came in the third period.
The X-Women outshot the Mounties 53-13 en route to the victory as they improve to 16-5-1 on the season, two points back of second place UPEI.
The Mounties, in eighth place, drop to 3-17-2.
The home squad got out to a 1-0 first period lead thanks to a goal 13 minutes in from forward Lea MacLeod (Dartmouth, NS). She brought the puck up the boards into the Mounties zone, beat a defender and cut to the front of the net where she sent a high shot past Bianca Zak (Stonewall, MB) in the Mount Allison net.
Zak made several key saves throughout the period to keep her team in the game as the Mounties were outshot 18-4 in the opening frame.
The X-Women increased their lead to 2-0 midway through the second period on a goal from Lacey Dimaulo (Okotok, AB). Lindsey Donovan (Mirimichi, NB) made a nice spin move at the point to elude a Mounties defender, then made the pass down low to Dimaulo who was at the side of net and beat Zak short side.
The goal held up as the only one of the period as the X-Women once again held the shot advantage in the middle frame at 13-6.
StFX doubled their lead with a pair of early third period goals. U SPORTS leading scorer Tyra Meropoulis (Edson, AB) scored her 22nd goal of the season on a nice end-to-end play, carrying the puck form within her own blue line and ripping a high shot past Zak just 24 seconds into the period.
Amy Graham (Nepean, ON) made it 5-0 for StFX when she broke through the faltering Mount A defense and ripped a slapshot from the slot past Zak.
Kaya Brossard (North Vancouver, BC) rounded out the X scoring with a power play goal with 1:06 left in the game as she banged in a rebound after Zak made a couple saves.
Final shots in the game were a lopsided 53-13 as Jamie Johnson (Victoria, BC) earned the shutout victory between the pipe for the X-Women.
The X-Women will be back in action on Friday night when they host the second place Panthers in a 7:00 pm game at the StFX Keating Centre. Mount A travels to Halifax to face-off against Dalhousie, also on Friday night.
