ANTIGONISH- The Dalhousie Tigers men's soccer team made it a three-point weekend as they defeated the STFX X-Men 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at STFX Stadium.
The X-Men were without the serives of some key starters over opening weekend, including Logan Rieck, Max Bodurtha, Sam Barrowcliffe and Ethan Larsen.
Mohammed Tolba opened the scoring for the Tigers, dispossessing a STFX defender and burying one from in tight five minutes into the match. Possession was close, though Dalhousie held the advantage in shots on goal as well as corner kicks.
Isaac VanWychen ripped a shot off the cross bar late in the first half that nearly tied the game.
Play was a bit chippy, with the officials hitting each team with a yellow card and eight fouls in the first half. Two more yellows came out in the second half.
STFX tried to get back into the game in the second half but weren't able to generate the tying goal. Tigers netminder Sinclair Astridge made a big save in injury time off a Cormac Mallet shot from close in injury time to keep the clean sheet, finishing with eight saves.
Player of the game for Dalhousie was Cole Savage, who was all over the pitch. Gabriel Pizza Player of the game for STFX was defender Max Cameron.
STFX hits to road for their next game, as they head to Halifax to take on the Saint Mary's Huskies on Friday night at 5:30 pm.
