Charlottetown, PEI – The STFX X-Men picked up a key road win Saturday night, defeating the UPEI Panthers 4-1. The White and Blue scored two goals apiece in the second and third periods to take the win.
It was the Panthers who struck first and held a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes as the lone goal of the period came at 11:22 off the stick of Robert Orr.
The X-Men then took a 2-1 lead with a pair of goals scored only 1:08 apart early in the second period. While on the power play 57 seconds in, Lucas Canning ripped a big shot past Panthers goalie Joe Ranger off a pass from Ryan McGuire.
Soon after Charlie Callahan buried the puck off a big rebound from a Cole Stewart shot. The 2-1 lead held up through 40 minutes.
The final two X goals came late in the third period. As the Panthers pulled Ranger from the net in favor of an extra attacker, Ben Mercer picked off the puck and scored an empty netter. He was actually slashed on the play and awarded the goal.
Player of the Game Logan Chisholm then sealed the deal with 48 seconds to go, potting another empty net marker.
Patrick Leaver had 27 saves in the X-Men net for the win as X was outshot 28-23 in the game.
STFX will be back in action on Friday, January 30th when they host the UNB REDS in a 7:00 pm game on home ice at the Keating Centre.
