Nathan Casey and Matt Cato each tallied two goals in X-Men's lopsided 8-1 win over Tigers in midweek game
ANTIGONISH, NS - The STFX X-Men picked up an important 8-1 win over the visiting Dalhousie Tigers at the Charles V Keating Centre on Wednesday night. The victory is the first of 2026 for the X-Men, who are looking to gain ground in the AUS standings.
Gabriel Pizza Player of the Game Nathan Casey had two goals on the night, while second star Matt Cato also had two, and third-star Raegan Wiles chipped in with three assists.
The X-Men dominated in the shots department in the fast paced first period, with Dalhousie netminder Carter Richardson making 17 saves in the opening 20 minutes.
X-Men forward Ben Mercer opened the scoring on the power play five minutes before intermission, tipping home a one-timer from Dominik Godin after a pass from Wiles.
Cato added another for the Blue and White four minutes later, stuffing in a Mark Woolley rebound.
STFX increased their lead five minutes into the second period, with Logan O'Neil knocking in a pass from Ryan McGuire while shorthanded.
The Tigers replied with a powerplay marker five minutes before the second intermission, as Ludovik Tardif hit the net of a cross-crease pass from Luke Johnston.
The X-Men continued to dominate in terms of scoring chances, but Richardson played big throughout.
Logan Chisholm potted another for STFX one-minute into the third period, after a pass to the front of the net from Cole Stewart. It was the first of five goals in the period for the White and Blue.
Cato notched his second of the night 90 seconds later, scoring short side 90 seconds later on a breakaway after a long bank pass from Wiles.
Nathan Casey tallied his first goal in a STFX uniform in the sixth minute, with McGuire adding his 9th goal of the season 60 seconds later.
Casey capped off the scoring with three minutes to go to make it an 8-1 final.
Jack Milner made 27 stops in the STFX net for the win, while Richardson finished with 52 saves.
The X-Men next hit the ice Saturday, January 17, when they visit les Moncton Aigles Bleus. Dalhousie returns home on Friday, January 16, when they host Moncton.
