X-Men drop road game to Acadia
Axemen defeat X-Men 6-2, using two power-play goals and heavy shot volume
Wolfville, NS – The Acadia Axemen defeated the STFX X-Men 6-2 on Saturday night, using two power-play goals and a heavy shot volume in the game. The Axemen finished with 44 shots and scored in every period.
Brady Burns led the way with two goals and three assists, including both power-play goals. Jordan Grill scored the game-winner, while Kian Bell added a goal and an assist. Goaltender Thomas Couture stopped 18 of 20 shots.
At the other end X-Men goaltender Patrick Leaver made 38 saves on the night.
Acadia opened the scoring at 8:20 of the first period when Marc Boudreau finished a pass from Cam Whynot and Burns for his first goal of the season. Bell made it 2–0 at 11:09, converting a feed from Burns and Boudreau.
STFX earned a power play shortly after, but Acadia's penalty kill held firm and the Axemen carried the two-goal lead into the first intermission.
The Axemen added to their lead early in the second as Grill scored on a play set up by Roenick Jodoin and Burns to make it 3–0. STFX responded with back-to-back power-play goals.
Logan O'Neil scored on the man advantage at 9:32, tucking in a rebound off a Charlie Callaghan shot.
Lucas Canning followed less than a minute later at 10:19, as Callaghan again was the set-up man, as Canning's one-timer cut the Acadia lead to one.
Acadia regained control late in the period as Burns scored on a rush with 25 seconds left in the period, sending his squad to the third period with a 4-2 lead.
The Axemen pulled away in the final period with goals from Zak Lavoie at 7:53 and Burns second of the night on the power play at 18:39.
The X-Men will be back in action on Wednesday night, January 14th when they host the Dalhousie Tigers in a 7:00 pm game at the Keating Centre.
