Bio

With power, presence, and elite athleticism, Michel Poirier carved his place in STFX hockey history as one of the most dominant defensemen of his era. A native of Montreal, Poirier arrived in Antigonish in 1965 after skating with the Montreal Junior Canadiens of the Major Junior Hockey League. From his first shift in the White and Blue, he brought a blend of toughness and skill that made him a cornerstone of the X-Men blueline.

Over four outstanding seasons, Poirier combined defensive strength with offensive production, leading all STFX rearguards in scoring each year and amassing an impressive 89 career points. A three-time MIAA conference all-star, he also wore the captain’s “C” with distinction, guiding the X-Men to three Maritime championships and berths at the CIAU national tournament.

Standing 6’0” and 210 pounds, Poirier was as dependable in his own zone as he was dangerous in the offensive end, earning recognition as one of the conference’s finest defensemen as he helped bring the program to national prominence during a golden era of X-Men Hockey.

Following his university career, Poirier continued to play professionally, including time in the AHL with the Montreal Canadiens’ organization and the Nova Scotia Voyageurs.
