Bio
The 1980-81 X-Men Basketball team stands as a landmark in STFX Basketball history - a squad that set new standards and brought home the first championship banner under the legendary career of head coach Steve Konchalski.
That season, the X-Men captured their first AUAA title in 21 years and rose to number one in the national rankings for the first time ever. With All-Canadians Mark Brodie and Varouj Gurunlian, the team stormed through three pre-season tournament championships, a 13–5 conference record, and an upset of previously undefeated Acadia in the season finale.
In the AUAA playoffs, they defeated both Saint Mary’s and Acadia in overtime thrillers to claim the conference crown. At nationals, they toppled number one York in the opening round before falling in a classic semifinal against Acadia after losing star Mark Brodie to injury. Averaging 99 points per game, the team dazzled fans across the country and set the benchmark for decades of X-Men Basketball excellence.
We proudly induct the following athletes, coaches and staff of the 1980-81 X-Men Basketball team: Sandy Archibald, Henry Blumenfeld, Shane Brewster, Mark Brodie, Greg Brown, Varouj Gurunlian, John Hatch, Norval McConnell, Geoff McIver, Shawn Parker, David Scott, Tom Sullivan, Head Coach Steve Konchalski, Assistant Coach Owen Cameron, Managers Ron MacDonald and Steven Lloyd, and Trainer Keith Burke.
