Ash runs to impressive 10th place finish in international race
Fourth year X-Women runner Caroline Ash places an impressive 10th in 3k race at 2026 FISU World University Cross Country Championship in Italy
Fourth year X-Women runner Caroline Ash competed Saturday at the 2026 FISU World University Cross Country Championship in Cassino, Italy as a member of Team Canada.
Ash placed an impressive 10th overall in the 3k race that featured 49 of the best cross country student-athletes from over 20 countries around the world. She clocked in with a time of 10:13 and was the second of four Canadians across the finish line.
The Canadian delegation featured a mix of national champions, podium finishers and experienced U SPORTS student-athletes who earned selection following strong performances at the 2025 U SPORTS Cross Country Championship.
Canada also earned a podium performance on Saturday, earning bronze in the women's team event. Led by strong performances in both the short and long races, the Canadian women combined for 72 points to secure third place behind Italy and Spain. The Italian squad captured the gold medal with 65 points, while Spain finished second with 69. (Points in the team event are awarded based on individual racers' finishes, so the objective is to score as few points as possible.)
Sophie Courville (McGill/Montréal, Que.) paced the Canadians in the women's individual long race, finishing sixth in 36 minutes 21 seconds to lead the Maple Leaf contingent. Alexandra McDougall (Guelph/Port Perry, Ont.) followed in 15th place in 37:07, while Maria Linton (Western/Cobourg, Ont.) rounded out Canada's scoring runners in 16th at 37:27.
In the earlier women's short race, Julia Agostinelli (Toronto/London, Ont.) delivered Canada's top finish, placing eighth in 10:08. Caroline Ash (STFX/Newmarket, Ont.) was close behind in 10th at 10:13, while Olivia Cooper (Alberta/Edmonton, Alta.) finished 17th in 10:22.
France's Clara Entresangle won the women's short race, while Italy's Lucia Arnoldo captured the women's long race title.
STFX head athletic therapist Diane Ouimet was also in Italy as a member of Team Canada, served as the athletic therapist for the Canadian student-athletes.
