X-Women fall to Huskies in AUS volleyball action

The StFX X-Women dropped a 3-1 decision to the host Saint Mary’s Huskies in AUS volleyball action Saturday afternoon in Halifax.
After losing the first set 25-21, the blue and white rallied to even the match at one set apiece (25-17). The Huskies wrapped up the match with 25-23 and 25-13 wins in the third and fourth sets, respectively.
For the X-Women, Aneta Nejmanova collected 17 points, including 12 kills, 23 total attacks and four digs, while Keirsten Wilson contributed 15 kills, 59 total attacks and nine digs in a 15.5 point effort.
Fifth-year senior Catherine Thornton chipped in 11 kills, 38 total attacks and 10 digs. Sadie Woodworth added 35 set assists and four digs, while libero Maria Dunphy contributed 21 digs.
Ariel Smith led the Huskies’ attack with an 18.5 point match, including 17 kills, 45 total attacks and 18 digs, while Nicole McCulloch scored 15.5 points, including 10 kills, 31 total attacks, three blocked shots and a service ace. Jane Pegg added 40 assists for the winners.
For the X-Women, Thornton is the AUS leader thus far this season with 100 kills, while Nejmanova is tops in hitting percentage (.415) and total blocks (36), including 20 solos.
With the loss, the X-Women fall to 3-5 on the regular season, while the Huskies improve to 2-6. The X-Women return to action Saturday, Nov. 24 when they travel to Halifax to face the Dalhousie Tigers in what will be their final AUS regular season game prior to the Christmas break.
