X-Women split volleyball matches

The StFX X-Women split a pair of home matches over the weekend in AUS women’s volleyball action.
Sunday afternoon, at Oland Centre, the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues swept the X-Women 3-0. Set scores were 25-19, 25-22 and 25-22.
Senior Catherine Thornton led the blue and white with 10 kills and seven digs as part of a 10-point effort. Keirsten Wilson notched eight points, including eight kills and six digs, along with 38 total attacks.
Kelsey Wolfenden chipped in with four kills, ten digs and two blocks. Libero Maria Dunphy had 16 digs.
Replying for the Aigles Bleues was Joline Richard with 10 kills and 10 digs, while Genevieve Leblanc had nine kills.
Saturday night, the X-Women rallied for a dramatic five-set win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies. After winning the first set 25-19, the Huskies came back to win their next two (23-25, 22-25). StFX followed up with a 25-23 fourth set victory and closed out the match 15-2.
First-year X-Woman Aneta Nejmanova led the attack with 29 points, including 16 kills, 10 blocks, five digs and three aces.
Thornton notched 11 kills and eight digs as part of a 12-point match, while Sadie Woodworth added 28 set assists to go with 19 she had Sunday versus Moncton.
Wilson contributed nine points on seven kills and two aces, and also had nine digs in the match. Wolfenden had 15 digs and Dunphy 25.
Leading the Huskies was Ariel Smith with 22 kills and 16 digs. Briana Donnelly had nine kills and 15 digs and Olivia Henderson had eight kills and 13 digs in the losing effort.
Currently sitting in third place in the AUS conference, the X-Women (3-4) return to action this weekend with a road trip to Halifax for matches against the CIS ranked No. 8 Dalhousie Tigers (4-2) and a rematch against the Huskies (1-6).
