Volleyball X-Women open regular season
The StFX X-Women opened their regular season with one win and three losses in the AUS-RSEQ interlock tournament action at Saint Mary’s and Dalhousie universities in Halifax over the weekend.
Sunday afternoon, the X-Women wrapped up the tournament with a hard fought, come-from-behind five-set win (13-25, 25-12, 24-26, 25-23 and 15-13) over the Montreal Carabins.
Fifth-year senior Catherine Thornton led the blue and white with 18 points, including 15 kills and 14 digs.Antigonish native Keirsten Wilson contributed 15 kills and eight digs as part of a 15-point effort, while first-year X-Woman Aneta Nejmanova chipped in 11.5 points.
Saturday evening, the blue and white dropped a four-set match (25-23, 26-24, 22-25, 25-22) to the Laval Rouge et Or.
Thornton led the X-Women attack with 18.5 points, including 15 kills and 16 digs, while Nejmanova chipped in 10 kills as part of a 15-point effort.
Wilson provided 10 kills and 19 digs, with Maria Dunphy contributing 21 digs. Kelsey Wolfenden provided four kills and 12 digs.
In their first match Saturday, the X-Women dropped a 25-15, 25-18 and 25-17 decision to the Sherbrooke Verte et Or. Thornton contributed nine kills and five digs in a 9.5 point effort, while Wilson added seven points, including seven kills and three digs. Dunphy added 13 digs for the X-Women.
Friday night, the blue and white opened the interlock tournament with a straight-set loss to the McGill Martlets (25-15, 25-21 and 25-21).
Thornton led the X-Women with 12 points, including 11 kills, four digs and one service ace. Wilson added eight points, including six kills, four digs and one service ace. Dunphy chipped in 14 digs for the blue and white.
The X-Women return to action Friday, Nov. 2, when they travel to Sydney to face the Cape Breton University Capers.
