Volleyball X-Women open exhibition season at DAL Invitational
October 1, 2012
The StFX X-Women volleyball team opened the exhibition season with a 2-2 record in four weekend matches at the Dalhousie Invitational tournament in Halifax.
Sunday, after taking the opening set (25-20), the blue and white lost a 3-1 decision to host Dalhousie Tigers, who scored 27-25, 25-12 and 25-15 wins in the final three sets.
X-Women head coach Danny Da Costa said his team “let one slip away,” noting they led in the second set before the Tigers rallied.
In the match, fifth-year senior Catherine Thornton notched 11 kills, while Keirsten Wilson contributed 15 digs. Melissa Landry, an Antigonish native, supplied one block and 27 assists.
Saturday, the X-Women split a pair of matches at Dalplex, including a 3-0 win over UNB Varsity Reds (25-23, 25-21, 25-20).
The Memorial SeaHawks defeated the X-Women 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-17).
"We tested a couple different things during the weekend and, even though we saw some good things, we still have some work to do to compensate for our height disadvantage. We also have to learn to keep pushing until the game is over,” Da Costa said.
The blue and white started the exhibition campaign on a winning note with a four-set win (25-17, 15-25, 25-22, 25-17) over the Saint Mary’s Huskies.
X-Women players of the match over the weekend were outside hitters Catherine Thornton and Keirsten Wilson, along with freshman Sadie Woodworth and libero Maria Dunphy. Dunphy, an Antigonish native, also earned a tournament all-star selection.
“Overall, it was a pretty good start for the X-Women,” Da Costa said.
The X-Women return to action Saturday, October 13, when they host the Acadia Axewomen in exhibition play. The opening serve is set for 4 p.m. at Oland Centre.
