X-Women eliminated by Tigers in AUS semifinal

The X-Women volleyball team faced the AUS top seed and CIS ranked No. 3 Dalhousie Tigers Saturday evening in Subway AUS semifinal action in St. John’s, NF, and were defeated in straight sets 3-0.
The first set was very close with the Tigers coming out on top at 26-24. They then followed up with wins of 25-10 and 25-17 to advance to the AUS championship game. Dalhousie will face the second seeded Saint Mary’s Huskies, who advanced with a 3-1 win over the Memorial Sea-Hawks in the other semifinal.
The Tigers were led by Louise Facca who had 15 kills, nine digs and two blocks. Tara Gowan and Maggie Li each had nine kills with Gowan adding three blocks. Tarah Truant had 13 digs on the defensive side with setter Hilary Sears contributing 37 assists and 10 digs in the victory.
Catherine Thornton led the StFX attack with 11 kills and also had 11 digs. Aneta Nejmanaova had six kills, five digs and three blocks, while Kirsten Wilson played another strong game defensively for the X-Women with 12 digs.
Libero Maria Dunphy had 17 digs in the match while setter Melissa Landry was big at the net with 12 blocks, in addition to her 26 assists and nine digs.
The X-Women had advanced to the semifinal showdown with a 3-2 victory over the UNB Varsity Reds Friday night. The championship game between the Tigers and Huskies is scheduled for Sunday at 2:00 pm.
