X-Women advance to semifinals with 3-2 win over UNB

The X-Women volleyball team advanced to the AUS semifinals with a 3-2 win over UNB Friday night in St. John’s, N.F. in Subway AUS quarter-final action.
StFX won the first two sets by close scores of 26-24 and 25-23 and had the V-Reds in the third set with two match points, only to see the Fredericton squad fight back to take the set at 27-25. UNB continued their comeback with a 25-21 fourth set victory to lock at the match at 2-2. The X-Women pulled off the 15-13 win in the deciding set to take the match.
AUS second team all-star Aneta Nejmanova had 16 kills for StFX in the victory, along with one service ace and two blocks for 18 total points. Fifth year veteran Catherine Thornton, named to the AUS first all star team last night, tallied 13 kills, 25 digs and one block, scoring 13.5 points for X.
Kelsey Wolfenden and Erin Sigalet each had eight kills. Wolfenden also contributed three aces, 17 digs and 12.5 points, while Sigalet had 10.5 points. Libero and AUS second team all-star Maria Dunphy had 30 digs for the X-Women and Kirsten Wilson recorded 12 digs. Setter Melissa Landry had 46 assists and 25 digs.
Replying for the Varsity Reds was Paige Nelmes with 16 kills, two aces and 26 digs for 18.5 points. AUS first team all-star Rebecca Glancy had 11 kills, one ace, 11 digs and 13.5 kills, while second team all-star Vanja Mitovic contributed 11 kills, one ace, 11 digs and 13.5 points.
Emma Hunt had 10 kills and Amber Gamblin had nine kills and 18 digs for the V-Reds. Monica Jones had 19 digs.
With the win, the X-Women advance to face the top seeded Dalhousie Tigers Saturday at 4:30 pm. In regular season play this year, the X-Women were 0-2 against the Tigers, losing 3-1 on Nov. 24th in Halifax and 3-0 on Jan. 19th at home in Antigonish, NS.
In the other AUS quarter-final match, the sixth seeded Memorial Sea-Hawks defeated the Moncton Aigles Bleues 3-2. The host Sea-Hawks will play second seeded Saint Mary’s in the second semifinal game Saturday at 6:30 pm. The championship game is slated for Sunday at 2:00. All games will be webcast live at www.AUStv.ca.
