Varsity Reds take five-set victory over X-Women
The X-Women volleyball team lost a close five-set match to the UNB Varsity Reds Saturday afternoon at the Oland Centre.
The visiting V-Reds opened the match with a 25-22 win, then the X-Women came back to win the second set 25-19. UNB took the third set 25-16 and StFX won the fourth by the same 25-16 score. The V-Reds hung on for a close 15-13 final set victory.
Vanja Mitrovic lead the Varsity Reds with 17 kills and also had one ace and eight digs. Amber Gamblin had 12 kills and 14 digs, while Rebecca Glancy had 11 kills, two digs and two blocks.
Libero Paige Nelmes had 22 digs, as well as eight kills and one ace. Celina Abba had a big game at the UNB net with nine blocks in the match, and she added seven kills. Setter Paige Paulsen had 47 assists.
Aneta Nejmanova led the X-Women attack with 16 kills, seven digs and six blocks. Catherine Thornton had 10 kills, one ace and 16 digs, while Erin Sigalet contributed nine kills and two blocks.
Kelsey Wolfenden had seven kills and a team-leading 18 digs, while libero Maria Dunphy had 15 digs in the match. Setter Melissa Landry had 48 assists.
The X-Women will be back on the Oland Centre court Sunday as they host the Cape Breton Capers at 2:00 pm. The game will be the final one of the AUS season.
