X-Women volleyball split weekend matches

The StFX X-Women scored a five-set come-from-behind road win (25-19, 19-25, 26-28, 25-17 and 15-9) over the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues Sunday afternoon in AUS volleyball action.
Aneta Nejmanova, a first-year X-Women from the Czech Republic, led the blue-and-white attack with 27 points, including 23 kills and four blocked shots.
Fifth-year senior Catherine Thornton contributed 13 kills, 20 digs and three aces as part of a 19-point effort. Kelsey Wolfenden and Keirsten Wilson added 19 and 15 digs, respectively, while Melissa Landry chipped in 47 assists in the win.
Crissy Roy led Moncton with 21 points, including 17 kills, six digs, two blocked shots and two aces. Sigourney Stott led the Aigles Bleues with 28 digs, while Veronique Carroll added 11 digs and 43 assists.
Saturday evening, in Fredericton, the X-Women dropped a hard fought four-set match (25-27, 23-25, 26-24 and 24-26) to the host UNB Varsity Reds.
Thornton led the X-Women with 23 points, including 21 kills, 14 digs and one ace. Wolfenden and Maria Dunphy contributed 24 and 22 digs, respectively, for the blue and white, while Landry and Wilson added 19 apiece in the loss. Landry also chipped in 42 assists to lead the team.
For the Varsity Reds, Paige Nelmes amassed 18.5 points, including 15 kills, 19 digs and three aces. Amber Gamblin led UNB with 28 digs, while Paige Paulsen contributed 47 assists.
The X-Women (7-9) will wrap up the regular season this weekend with a pair of home matches at Oland Centre. Saturday, Feb. 9, the UNB Varsity Reds (6-10) will visit Antigonish, while the Cape Breton University Capers (1-15) will be the opponent Sunday, Feb. 10. Opening serve for both matches is scheduled for 2 p.m.
