X-Women volleyball 1-1 at home
The X-Women volleyball team hosted a pair of matches this weekend and came away with a 3-1 win over Acadia and a 3-0 loss to CIS No. 5 Dalhousie.
In Friday night’s match at the Oland Centre against the Axewomen, StFX opened with a 25-22 first set victory, then fell by the same 25-22 score in the second set to the visiting squad. They regrouped for a close 27-25 third set victory, then closed out the match with a 25-14 fourth set win.
Veteran fifth year hitter Catherine Thornton led the StFX attack with 14 kills in the match. She also had two aces, two blocks and 13 digs. Freshman Aneta Nejmanova had 10 kills for X, along with one ace, one block and six digs.
Kelsey Wolfenden contributed eight kills, once ace and 15 digs for the X-Women, while Erin Sigalet had seven kills, one ace, two blocks and 14 digs. Libero Maria Dunphy recorded 20 digs and setter Melissa Landry had 40 set assists and 11 digs.
Replying for the Axewomen was Meg Rector with 10 digs, one ace and five kills, with Ayssa Berry recording seven kills, one ace and 10 digs. Setter Lauren Carter had 28 set assists in the match and 17 digs, while libero Pamela Giordani had 20 digs.
In Saturday afternoon’s match against the CIS ranked NO. 5 Dalhousie Tigers, the X-Women fell in straight sets 3-0.
Dalhousie opened the match with a 25-19 first set win, then after establishing a 24-14 lead in the second set, the X-Women came back and almost pulled off an upset. Second year hitter Braelin Rowe came in to serve and helped lead her teammates to ten consecutive points to tie the score at 24-24. The Tigers then pulled off two quick points to take the set 26-24.
The AUS-leading Tigers then pulled off a 25-21 third set victory to take the match and improve their record to 11-2 atop the AUS standings. The X-Women currently sit in fourth place with 10 points and a 5-8 record, two points back of both Moncton (6-5) and Saint Mary’s (6-6).
Tara Gowan had 10 kills and three blocks for the Tigers, while Maggie Li had nine kills, one ace, two blocks and five digs. Tarah-Kynn Truant had 18 digs, Raessa Lalani had 12 and Lousie Facca contributed four kills and 10 digs. Setter Hilary Sears had 32 set assists and six digs.
Thornton led the X-Women with 10 kills and 17 digs. Nejmanova had seven kills, six blocks and nine digs, while Wolfenden chipped in with four kills, four aces and six digs. Dunphy had eight digs in the match for the X-Women and Landry had 20 set assists and four digs.
Next on the schedule for StFX is a single game against seventh place Acadia (2-12) on Friday, January 25th. Game time is 7:00 pm in Wolfville, NS.
