X-Women split matches with Sea-Hawks

The X-Women volleyball team played a pair of matches in St. John’s this week and came away with a 1-1 split with the Memorial Sea-Hawks. The games were played Monday and Tuesday, postponed from the weekend due to a major snow storm in Newfoundland.
On Monday evening, the X-Women defeated the Sea-Hawks 3-1, but then fell in straight sets 3-0 on Tuesday morning.
Monday’s match saw the home team Sea-Hawks open with a close 25-23 first set victory, but then the X-Women came back with three consecutive wins at 25-13, 25-19 and 25-21.
Veteran fifth year hitter Catherine Thornton led the StFX attack with 18 kills. She also had one ace and a game-high 17 digs. Aneta Nejmanova had 14 kills for X, along with two aces, two blocks and five digs. Keirsten Wilson contributed 10 kills, one ace and 12 digs.
Setter Melissa Landry had 48 set assists in the match, along with three aces and nine digs, while libero Maria Dunphy had 14 digs.
Replying for the Sea-Hawks was Angela Peddle with 11 kills and two blocks and Jill Snow with eight kills. Laura Camanico and Lauren Miller each had 10 digs in the match for Memorial and setter Gillian Ricketts had 14.
The Sea-Hawks played a closer match with the X-Women on Tuesday morning, coming out to win consecutive sets by close scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-23.
Peddle again led the Memorial attack with 10 kills, as Camanico had nine kills, three aces and eight digs. Miller chipped in seven kills and eight digs and Snow had six kills and 16 digs in the match.
Nejmanova recorded 11 kills, two aces, one block and four digs in the losing effort for the X-Women, while Thornton had 10 kills and four digs. Wilson had three kills and eight digs in the match, with Dunphy adding 14 digs.
With the 1-1 split, the X-Women remain tied for fourth place in the AUS conference with eight points and a 4-7 record. The Sea-Hawks (3-7) are in sixth place.
Next on the schedule for StFX is a pair of home games this coming weekend. Friday evening, January 18th at 7:00 pm the X-Women will host the seventh place Acadia Axewomen (2-10), followed by a 2:00 pm game on Saturday against the first place Dalhousie Tigers (9-2).
