Volleyball splits home games
The X-Women volleyball team played two games on home court this past weekend and came away with a win and a loss. Saturday afternoon they played to a 3-2 win over Moncton, while on Sunday the UNB Varsity Reds blanked the X-Women 3-0.
Each game in the match against UNB was close as the V-Reds won 25-23, 25-22 and 25-23. Katrina Legutky and Vanja Mitrovic each had 10 kills apiece for the Varsity Reds. Legutky also had three service aces and six digs with 13 points. Monica Jones contributed with seven digs.
For the X-Women, Katherine Ryan had nine kills in the match, along with three digs for nine points. Jessica Roberts added six kills, two digs, two service aces, and scored 9.5 points, while Catherine Thornton added five kills.
On Saturday afternoon at the StFX Oland Centre the X-Women opened up the match against the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleues with a 2-0 lead after 25-18 and 25-22 set wins. The Aigles came back with consecutive 25-20 wins in the third and fourth sets to tie the match, before the X-Women closed it out with the 15-7 fifth set victory.
Subway Player of the Game Catherine Thornton led the StFX attack with 20 kills and 21 points scored. She also had 13 digs in the match. Teammates Ryan and Roberts each recorded 14 kills apiece. Ryan added 14 digs, two blocks with 15 points, while Roberts had 20 points including four service aces. Kiersten Wilson contributed five kills, six points and 13 digs and libero Maria Dunphy had 23 digs for the X-Women.
Crissy Roy led the Aigles Bleues with 12 kills, seven service aces and 21.5 points. Genevieve LeMay had nine kills and 10 points while Stephanie Lagace added eight kills, 13 digs and 9.5 points.
The weekend matches marked the end of AUS regular season play prior to the holiday break. The X-Women currently hold a 5-4 record and sit in fourth place in the AUS conference with 10 points, two back of third place Cape Breton. StFX has a long break before resuming play on January 14th and 15th with two home games. They will host second place Dalhousie (7-2) on Jan. 14th at 2:00 pm, followed by another 2:00 game on Jan. 15th against Cape Breton (6-1).
