X-Women volleyball win UNB Invitational

The X-Women volleyball team saw success on the court in their second weekend of pre-season exhibition play as they took home top honors in the five-team UNB Invitational tournament in Fredericton. The X-Women had a 5-1 tournament record and defeated the Universite de Moncton 3-1 in the championship game Sunday afternoon.
On Friday afternoon the X-Women opened the tournament with a 3-2 win over Royal Military College, then followed up with a 3-2 victory over Acadia. Saturday brought a 3-0 win over the host UNB Varsity Reds, followed by their only loss of the tournament, 3-2 loss to Moncton.
The 3-1 round robin record was good enough for second spot, and in the semi-final game Sunday morning, the X-Women beat the Acadia Axewomen 3-1 to advance to the final against Moncton.
In the championship match, StFX opened with a 25-18 win, then fell 22-25 before closing out in four sets with 25-16 and 25-17 games. Tournament all-star led the X-Women charge with 19 kills while freshman Kelsey Wolfenden had 12 kills and 19 digs. Tournament Most Valuable Player Catherine Thornton contributed 8 kills and 19 digs in the win.
In the 3-1 semi-final win over Acadia, the X-Women dropped the first set by a close 23-25 margin then came back to win 25-18, 25-22 and 27-25. Ryan had 20 kills and 10 digs, while Erin Sigalet provided 13 kills and 3 blocks and Thornton had 10 kills and 7 digs. Wolfenden played well defensively with 23 digs and also recorded 8 kills.
The X-Women’s one loss was a close 3-2 setback to Moncton on Saturday evening. They opened the match 2-0 (25-16, 25-19) but the Aigles Bleues fought back and won the next two sets 25-16, 25-22 then took the tiebreaker 15-10. Thornton led the X-Women attack with 16 kills and 17 digs. Ryan contributed 10 kills and 11 digs while Wolfenden had 9 kills, 17 digs and 7 aces in the game.
Earlier Saturday, the X-Women blanked the host UNB Varsity Reds 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-21). Thornton had 9 kills and 7 digs, Keirsten Wilson had 9 kills and 4 digs, and Ryan tallied 8 kills and 4 digs. Sigalet has 4 service aces in the match for the blue and white.

They had a see-saw battle with Acadia with set scores of 21-25, 24-26, 25-21, 25-19 and 15-6. Ryan led the X-Women with 12 kills and 12 digs, while Thornton had 11 kills and 8 digs. Wilson provided 10 kills, 17 digs and 2 blocks and fellow freshman Sigalet had 10 kills, 7 aces, 6 digs and 3 blocks.
The X-Women also earned a 3-2 win over OUA opponent Royal Military College. They opened the match with a 2-0 lead after 25-17 and 25-13 wins, then let their opponents get back in the match at 21-25 and 24-26 before closing out the victory with a 15-8 tiebreak. Game stats were not available for the first tournament game.

The X-Women improved to 7-3 in pre-season competition, following a previous 2-2 weekend at the Dalhousie Invitational. Next on the schedule for the X-Women is an AUS regular season opening tournament at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax October 28-29. StFX will play games against Acadia, Moncton and Saint Mary’s.
