Getting to Know...Jessica Roberts
X-Women volleyball middle blocker Jessica Roberts is the latest athlete featured in our Getting to Know your X-Women and X-Men series throughout the summer. Jessica recently completed her first year with the X-Women and is a Human Kinetics student from Calgary, AB.
What brought you to StFX?
I came to STFX because I fell in love with the atmosphere of the town and saw that there was a great opportunity for me to excel academically within the high standards of the university. Also a big reason I came to X was Michelle Aucoin. She has a lot of knowledge and I knew I could learn so much from her.
What has been your best moment in a StFX uniform so far?
The best moment so far in my StFX uniform was when one of our middles got injured during a game and our other middle was already injured previously, leaving us with one middle. We had to put in one of our setters who has never played middle before. It was the funniest game I have ever watched! As she was about to go on she turned to me and said “One thing…What do I do?” Seeing the team come together to support each other, especially the non-middle and win the game! I felt honored not only to be able to play that game but to play on a team that could give everything at any given time!
What are you most looking forward to this season?
This season I am most looking forward to learning from my mistakes of last season and winning the banner as a team.
Who has been the most influential person in your life (and why)?
The most influential person in my life so far is my father. My whole family is very supportive of my love for volleyball, and my accomplishments. My dad is the one that challenges me to face reality and deal with situations when I haven’t played my best, when I have struggled in practice, or gotten down on myself. Dealing with these is tough, but learning from my mistakes makes me a better player and a better person.
