Wilson represents NS on the indoor and beach volleyball courts
StFX women's volleyball hitter Kiersten Wilson is heading into her second season with the blue and white this coming fall after keeping herself busy this past summer on the volleyball courts – both indoors and on the beach.
The local Antigonish, N.S. native and product of Dr. J. H. Gillis Regional high school was a member of the 2013 Nova Scotia Canada Games core 19U team, and also played on the Nova Scotia provincial beach volleyball team. The 5'8” left/right side hitter practiced throughout June and July in Halifax under the direction of head coach Rick Scott (also the head coach of the Dalhousie Tigers) for the Canada Games team. Kiersten and her teammates competed at the NTCC tournament in Winnipeg where they placed fifth out of 15 teams, Nova Scotia’s best showing ever at the nationals.
At the Eastern Elite tournament in Halifax in late July, the Nova Scotia squad placed first overall, defeating Newfoundland in the championship game byt socres of 25-15, 25-11 and 25-23. Teams from Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia competed.
The Nova Scotia provincial beach volleyball team was coached by Brock Pehar, who is also the technical director of Volleyball Nova Scotia. Wilson's partner on the sand was Karly Hiscock who will be playing with Acadia this fall. The duo played in the Atlantic Championship 24U Open Youth Tournament August 11-12 at Parlee Beach, NB with teams from New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia competing. Wilson and Hiscock took home the silver medal from that event, losing to a New Brunswick team in the third set of the final. They opted not to make the trip to the national championship in Vancouver and have closed out their summer competing.
Wilson said of the beach event, “It was a great tournament and we were very pleased with our placing.”
Keirsten played 31 games in 11 matches for the X-Women in AUS competition last season in her first year for StFX. She recorded 29 kills and 40 digs and 33.5 points. The X-Women volleyball team begins exhibition play at the Dalhousie Invitational tournament September 28-30.
