Da Costa named to team Canada coaching staff
StFX X-Women volleyball head coach Danny Da Costa was selected recently to be part of Team Canada's women’s senior ‘B’ coaching staff. Da Costa will have a dual function during this summer's training camp, acting as part-head coach and part-assistant coach.
Da Costa recently completed his first full season as head coach of the X-Women, and is looking forward to work with the Canadian national team. “Having the chance to be part of your country's coaching staff is always an honour,” comments Da Costa.
"I am looking forward to work with a great group of coaches, as well as some of the best athletes across the country. I am sure this will be a great experience.”
For the upcoming summer, Da Costa will be one of three coaches in charge of a group of 10-12 athletes that will be training twice a day, five days a week, for a period of four weeks from May 26th through to June 26th. Team Canada’s head coach Arnd Ludwig will be supervising the group of coaches while evaluating potential full-time Team Canada athletes.
The objective of the training camp is to train and evaluate players that could potentially become part of the national senior ‘A’ team roster in the future. It will also be used to select certain players who will be representing Canada in preparation for the women’s Pan American Cup, slated for Ciudad Juárez, Mexico from July 4-14th.
The Pan American Cup is an annual competition where the world's highest ranked teams from the Caribbean along with North, Central and South American countries compete. The tournament is a qualifier for the FIVB World Grand Prix with the top three finishers of the Pan Am Cup within the NORCECA division advancing, along with the top South American team.
Da Costa is presently finalizing recruiting for the 2012-13 AUS varsity season, then will be heading to Winnipeg to get ready for team Canada tryouts in late May. Da Costa’s X-Women compiled an 8-9 record, good enough for fourth place in the AUS standings in 2011-12. They lost out a close 3-1 match to the Memorial Sea-Hawks in the AUS quarter-finals.
