X-Women Volleyball Preview vs ACA & DAL
The X-Women volleyball team play a home and away game this weekend as they are getting down to crunch time with the AUS playoffs just around the corner. Friday evening, February 3rd the fourth place X-Women will host the sixth place Acadia Axewomen in a 7:00 pm match at the StFX Oland Centre, then they turn around for a Sunday afternoon game in Halifax against the second place Dalhousie Tigers. StFX is currently tied for fourth spot with Memorial with 12 points apiece, while the Axewomen are only two points off. The three teams have two weekend left in the regular season to battle it out for the fourth and fifth playoff positions as seventh place Moncton have already secured their berth as the tournament hosts.
X-Women vs. Axewomen: The X-Women and Axewomen haven’t seen each other since the opening game of the season back on October 28th when the X-Women played to a 3-1 victory (25-13, 25-17, 15-25, 25-16) at the AUS opening tournament on neutral court at Saint Mary’s. The two teams will meet again next Saturday in Wolfville, NS to close out regular season play.
X-Women vs. Dalhousie: The X-Women and Tigers have one game under their belts from this past January 14th when the Tigers defeated the X-Women by a 3-0 score (25-23, 25-16, 25-20) on home court in Antigonish. The Tigers have been on a roll as of late and are ranked 9th in the country. They recently defeated the CIS No. 3 and previously undefeated Saint Mary’s Huskies. The X-Women are coming off a 3-1 win over UNB after breaking a five-game losing skid.
StFX Key Players: Katherine Ryan is having another strong season for the X-Women, leading the team in hitting percentage at .188. She is also sixth in the AUS in kills with 150 total on the season for a 2.78 game average. Ryan is also sixth overall in points scored with 170.5 total (3.81 avg/game) and is tenth in the conference in digs, averaging 2.78/game (150 total). Former AUS MVP Catherine Thornton is fifth in the league in kills with 155, averaging 2.87/game and is seventh in points scored with 170.0 for a 3.15 average/game.
Acadia Key Players: Meg Rector leads the Axewomen in hitting percentage this season at .259, good enough for fifth in the conference. She is also sixth overall in conference blocking with 47 on the season for a 0.92 blocking average per game. Nicole Davidson leads the team in kills, averaging 2.26/game and 113 total for the season. She is also in the top 15 in AUS digs with 130 for a 2.60 average/game. Teammate Alana Murphy is close behind Davidson in the kill category with 117 on the season (2.21 average).
Dalhousie Key Players: Maggie Li has played well for the Tigers this year, she currently leads the conference in hitting percentage at .389 and is eighth overall in kills with 118 (2.31 average). Li is also seventh in blocking, averaging 1.33 blocks/game with 68 on the season, and is eighth overall in points scored with 160.0 (3.14 avg). Teammates Kirstie Shepherd and Louise Facca are also playing strong volleyball for the black and gold. Shepherd leads the AUS conference in blocks with 68 (1.33 blocks/game) and is seventh overall with a .196 hitting percentage. Facca is third in kills with 148 total for a 2.90 average kills/game. She’s also up there in points scored with 3.81/game (236 total), good enough for third in the conference.
