X-Women volleyball defeat Varsity Reds
The StFX X-Women volleyball team recorded a 3-1 win over the UNB Varsity Reds Sunday afternoon in Fredericton. The victory broke the X-Women’s five game losing skid.
StFX won the first set 25-21 then came from behind to take a close 27-25 victory in the second set to go ahead 2-0 in the match. The Varsity Reds fought back to win the third set by a 25-18 score, but the X-Women were able to close out the match and the 3-1 win with a 25-15 fourth set victory.
Katherine Ryan led the blue and white with 14 kills, two blocks and 20 digs, while Catherine Thornton chipped in 17 kills, two blocks and eight digs. Kelsey Wolfenden contributed 10 kills.
Setter Heather Isenor recorded 46 assists and was also in on four blocks and had 10 digs in the match.
Sophomore Jessica Roberts was named player of the match for the X-Women. She had four kills, three service aces and five blocks.
Emma Hunt was the player of the game for the Varsity Reds, recording 10 kills, 13 digs and two blocks. Vanja Mitrovic had 15 kills, four digs and three blocks. Monica Jones had 24 digs in the match for the V-Reds.
Saturday evening, the X-Women dropped a five-set battle on the road to the Université de Moncton les Aigles Bleues. After the teams split the first four sets (13-25, 25-23, 18-25 and 25-14), the home team secured the match with a 15-11 win in the final set.
Ryan led the X-Women with 18 kills, two blocks and 15 digs, while Thornton contributed 11 kills and 21 digs. Freshman Kelsey Wolfenden chipped in 15 digs , three service aces and seven kills.
Isenor recorded 37 set assists and 15 digs while libero Maria Dunphy had 33 digs in the match for the X-Women.
Leading the Aigles Bleues was Crissy Ross with 12 kills and 19 digs. Stephanie Lagace had 12 kills and 15 digs with Joline Richard contributing 9 kills and 23 digs.
With the weekend split, the X-Women are currently 6-8 on the AUS season with 10 points. They are tied for fourth place in the conference with the Memorial University SeaHawks.
StFX returns to action Friday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. when they host the sixth place Acadia Axewomen (5-9) at Oland Centre. The blue and white will then hit the road Sunday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. to face the second place Dalhousie Tigers (11-3) in Halifax.
