X-Women volleyball fall to CIS No. 3 Huskies
The X-Women volleyball team lost a 3-1 game to the CIS ranked No. 3 Saint Mary’s Huskies Saturday afternoon at the StFX Oland Centre. The Huskies continue their undefeated season at 11-0 atop the AUS conference.
The X-Women slip to 5-7 on the season and currently sit in a tie for fourth place with Memorial, although three league games are scheduled for Sunday afternoon. The X-Women are idle.
In Saturday’s game, the X-Women opened up the first set with strong play, taking a 25-23 win from the Huskies. Saint Mary’s regained its balanced attack for the remainder of the match, however, and took the next three sets 25-10, 25-17 and 25-12 from the X-Women.
Reigning AUS Most Valuable Player Kerri Smit lead the Huskies attack, posting 20 kills and also contributing 24 digs, 2 service aces and 1 block for 23 points in the match. Ariel Smith had 8 kills, 14 digs, 2 service aces and 1 block for 11 points and Tessa Felix recorded 8 kills and 4 blocks with 11.5 points.
On the X-Women side of the net, Katherine Ryan had 11 kills, 17 digs and 1 block for 11.5 X-Women points, while Kelsey Wolfenden had 8 kills and 10 digs for X, contributing 8.5 points. Jessica Roberts and Catering Thornton each had 5 kills in the match with Roberts adding 2 service aces and 4 blocks for 10 total points. Libero Maria Dunphy had 11 digs.
After losing four consecutive league games, dating back to November 27th, the X-Women will be looking to turn things around when they head on the road for a pair of matches in New Brunswick. Saturday, January 28th they will take on Moncton, followed by a game against UNB on January 29th.
