X-Women Split Weekend Games
The X-Women volleyball squad finished up their regular season this past weekend with a trip to New Brunswick where they earned a split, after beating University of Moncton (3-2) and fell to the 2nd place UNB Varsity Reds (1-3).
Leading the way for the Blue & White vs Moncton (25-19, 16-25, 23-25, 25-14, 15-9) was Catherine Thornton with 20 kills & 21 digs. Katherine Ryan added 14 kills, 2 blocks and 18 digs, while Michaela Vorlova added 15 kills, 1 ace and 15 digs. Maria Dunphy returned to the line-up after an injury to collect 11 digs. Heather Isenor was solid quarterbacking the offense with 53 assists, 2 aces and 12 digs. Moncton was led by Crissy Roy with 12 kills and Veronique Carroll who was solid quarterbacking her team with 35 assists and 4 aces. Moncton dropped to 7-10 with the loss. The win improved X's record to 9-8 which clinched a play-off berth for the X-Women.
On Sunday, in a loss to UNB (18-25, 25-21, 13-25, 19-25), Catherine Thornton led the way again for the X-Women collecting 13 kills and 13 digs. Jessica Roberts (7 kills, 1 ace) and Jessica Nichols (7 kills, 1 ace, 8 digs) also chipped in. UNB was led by 5th year stars Jillian Blanchard (19 kills, 18 digs) and Erica Hay (16 kills, 2 aces). The win moved UNB into second place earning the bye to the AUS Semi-final and the loss dropped the Blue & White's record to 9-9 and a 4th place conference finish. The X-Women will now face the University of Moncton (#5) in the AUS Quarterfinal this coming weekend at Cape Breton University.
