X-Women win twice over Seahawks, tied for 1st place
The X-Women volleyball squad won a pair of matches at home against the Memorial Seahawks, both with 3-0 scores. The weekend games were delayed a day due to a winter storm in Newfoundland and travel delays.
\r\nOn Sunday night at the StFX Oland Centre, the X-Women came away with 3-0 straight sets victory with game wins of 25-11, 25-18 and 25-20.
\r\nLeft side hitter Catherine Thornton led the StFX attack with 17 points on 17 kills and also had 9 digs in the match. Katherine Ryan scored 10 points and had 7 kills, 2 aces and 15 digs.
\r\nJessica Nichols contributed 15 digs and Player of the Game Heather Isenor had 26 set assists and 7 digs.
\r\nErin Bursey tallied 7 points, 6 kills and 13 digs for the Seahawks while libero Nicole Jolliffe had 15 digs.
\r\nOn Monday morning, the X-Women again made quick work of the visiting Seahawks, downing them 3-0 with scores of 25-16, 25-12 and 25-15.
\r\nPlayer of the Game Katherine Ryan tallied 17 points, 16 kills, 1 ace and 7 digs for the X-Women, while teammate Alex Quinn had 9.5 points, 7 kills, 1 ace and 2 blocks.
\r\nCatherine Ryan had 7 points, 5 kills, 2 aces and 9 digs and libero Leah McInnis posted 11 digs on defense.
\r\nErin Bursey again led Memorial with 8 points, 7 kills and 10 digs.
\r\nWith the two weekend wins, the X-Women improve to 10-7 and currently sit in a tie for first place overall with Saint Mary’s (10-6) with a game in hand. Both teams have 20 points on the season, two more then second place UNB (9-7).
\r\nThe race for the final AUS playoff positions will be tight as teams wrap up regular season play next weekend. The Huskies and Varsity Reds each have two games remaining, as does third place Acadia (8-8), currently 4 points out of the first place. The X-Women have one match left on the schedule, Saturday, Feb. 13th against the Saint Mary’s Huskies in Halifax at 2:00 pm.
\r\nThe AUS championship is slated for Feb. 19-21 at Saint Mary’s, with the top two teams from the regular season standings earning first round playoff byes and direct berths into the semi-finals.
