X-Women beat CBU in 5 sets
The X-Women volleyball team won their fourth consecutive match Thursday night with a 3-2 victory over the Cape Breton Capers in Sydney.
\r\nThe X-Women have settled in second term, winning 7 of 8 games since resuming competition in January, and currently sit in second place in the AUS with 16 points and an 8-7 record.
\r\nStFX opened the road match Thursday night with a close 25-23 first set victory, but the Capers stormed back taking the 2nd and 3rd sets by 25-14 and 25-15 scores. The X-Women won the 4th set 25-22 and came out strong in the 5th and final set with a 15-9 win.
\r\nLeft side hitter Catherine Thornton led the way offensively for StFX, scoring 23 points, 21 kills, 1 ace, 2 blocks and contributing 7 digs. Katherine Ryan posted 16.5 points, 15 kills, 1 ace, 1 block and 21 digs. Ryan (2.85) and Thornton (2.84) currently sit fifth and sixth, respectively, in the AUS in kills per game.
\r\nMiddle blocker Alex Quinn had 16.5 points, 13 kills, 1 ace and 5 blocks for the blue and white, while Jessica Nichols tallied 13 points, 11 kills, 1 ace, 2 blocks and 16 digs.
\r\nSetter Heather Isenor had 61 set assists in the match, along with 3 aces and 6 digs while teammate Leah McInnis in the libero position had a season-high 32 digs on the night.
\r\nReplying for the Capers was Megan Brown who had 21.5 points, 21 kills and 18 digs, while Diana Benoit scored 15 points, 15 kills and 4 aces. Hilary Cummings contributed 14 points, 14 kills and 20 digs, with libero Kristen Ryan recording 36 digs.
\r\nThe X-Women will host a pair of weekend matches at the StFX Oland Centre, their final home games of the season, and both against the last place Memorial Seahawks (1-15). Game time on Saturday night is 6:00 pm, followed by an 11:00 am Sunday morning match.
