Capers defeat X-Women in 'Serve up a Cure' event
The X-Women volleyball team dropped a quick match to the visiting Cape Breton Capers Saturday night at the StFX Oland Centre, losing 3-0. Set scores were 25-20, 25-20 and 25-21 as the X-Women fall to 1-2 on the season.
\r\nCatherine Thornton played well for the X-Women with 12 kills, 1 ace, 4 digs and a block, while Julie Gillis helped out with 9 kills, 5 digs and 1 block.
\r\nKatherine Ryan added 7 kills and 4 digs for StFX and Leah McInnis had 8 digs in the libero position. Heather Isenor posted 29 set assists and also had 2 aces and 5 digs.
\r\nHilary Cummings led the Capers attack with 12 kills, 6 digs and 2 blocks while teammate Vanessa St. Georges had 11 kills, 1 ace and 3 blocks. Kristen Ryan had 14 digs.
\r\nThe game marked the X-Women’s annual ‘Serve up a Cure’ event for breast cancer research. Together with the X-Women basketball team’s ‘Drive for a Cure’ event the previous evening, the two X teams raised close to $1000 for the worthy cause.
\r\nProceeds were raised from raffle ticket sales and donations collected for pink breast cancer awareness ribbons. Funds will be donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation Atlantic division and the Cancer Resource Room at the local St. Martha’s Regional Hospital.
\r\nWith a 1-2 record on the season, the X-Women are currently in a three-way tie for second place in the AUS standings with 2 points to their credit. Next on their schedule is an interlock trip to Montreal Nov. 20-22 where they will face QSSF opponents Sherbrooke, McGill, Laval and Montreal.
