X-Women lose to Capers in AUS quarterfinals
(Wolfville, NS) - The #4 seeded Cape Breton Capers advanced to semi-final play after winning their quarterfinal matchup 3-1 against the #5 seeded StFX X-Women. Caper Hillary Cummings posted a team high 14 kills and 13 digs while teammate Brianne Walsh, who was honoured as an All-Star this week, added 14 kills to Cape Breton's win.
Following a 9-9 tie early in the first set, the Capers led the X-Women for the entire first game with Cummings recording 5 of her 14 kills in the first set. The X-Women fought back in the second frame as the Capers took an early lead that was erased at 13-13 following two attack errors and a service error by Cape Breton. StFX grabbed the second game 25-23.
Cape Breton took a 10-3 lead in the third set and maintained the lead for the entire frame to capture a 2-1 match lead on a 25-19 third game victory. In the fourth and eventual final set, the X-Women gave up a 13-9 lead, allowing Cape Breton to tie the game at 13-13 on a service ace by Emma Stanfield. The Capers eventually won the set 25-22 despite a late game rally by StFX.
\r\nAUS Rookie of the Year Katherine Ryan offered 15 kills, 3 aces and 16 digs for StFX while teammate Laura Machowski added 13 kills and 18 digs in the losing cause.
