Volleyball X-Women win two at home
The X-Women volleyball team kept their playoff hopes alive with a pair of wins on home court this past weekend over Acadia and UPEI, both in straight set 3-0 scores.
The X-Women took to the court on Saturday night , with the hopes of staying alive in a hunt for a playoff berth. Hosting the Acadia Axewomen, who have an entry into the AUS championship as the host, the Blue and White were able to grab a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 29-27) win and keep their play-offs hopes alive. Leading the way for the X-Women were a duo of rookies. Katherine Ryan collected 20 points (19 kills, 1 ace, 11 digs) while Stephanie Bullock collected 14 points (13 kills, 1 ace and 8 digs) and had a solid 46% attack efficiency.
Heather Isenor (37 assists, 1 ace, 7 digs), Laura Machowski (4 kills, 1 ace, 8 digs) and Megan Pothier were solid but it was the play of the 2 middle blockers that allowed X to have success. Player of the game Allison Duggan (6 kills, 2 blocks) and Layla Calvi (5 kills, 1 ace) stepped up their game allowing the blue and white to grab the straight sets win.
On Sunday afternoon the X-Women again brought their winning game to the court with a 3-0 victory over the UPEI Panthers (25-19, 25-12, 25-14). Katherine Ryan again played a strong game for X recording 13 kills and 13 digs. Veteran fifth year player Laura Machowski had 11 kills and 16 digs and Stephanie Bullock had 9 kills and 8 digs.
With the two wins the X-Women remain in the hunt for the fifth and final playoff spot. With a 7-12 record, they are currently tied with Memorial (7-11) for fith spot with 14 points a piece. Dalhousie (6-12) is on their tails with 12 points. The X-Women will travel to Halifax Friday night for thier final regular seaosn match against the Tigers on Friday night. Both Dalhousie and Memorial each have two matches remaining, so the final playoff spot will be decided on the last weekend of the season.
