Volleyball X-Women drop 2 on the road
The X-Women volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on the road this weekend. Friday night they lost a disappointing 3-2 to Cape Breton and Sunday afternoon were swept 3-0 by Saint Mary’s.
\r\nOn Friday night in Sydney, NS the X-Women opened the match with two consecutive wins, winning the first set 25-18 and the second 26-24. The Capers rallied back however, taking the next two sets by 25-15 and 25-17 scores. The fifth and final game was a close one as well, with the X-Women coming out on the short end of a 15-12 score. Unfortunately the X-Women also lost starter Megan McDonald to a knee injury early on in the match.
\r\nKatherine Ryan had 21 kills for the X-Women in the match and 11 digs. Laura Machowski recorded 14 kills and 13 digs and 1 serving ace while Stephanie Bullock had 12 kills, 7 digs and 5 aces. Libero Megan Pothier had 13 digs and X-Women setter Heather Isenor had 50 set assists.
\r\nBrianne Walsh led the Capers with 20 kills. Megan Brown had 11 kills and 10 digs and Hilary Cummings had 11 kills and 9 digs.
\r\nIn Sunday’s match in Halifax, the second place Saint Mary’s Huskies held the advantage en route to a 3-0 win over the X-Women and in doing so clinched a playoff spot. They won the match with set scores of 25-10, 25-17 and 25-16.
\r\nKatherine Ryan had 8 kills and 10 digs in the losing effort for the X-Women and Laura Machowski had 5 kills and 5 digs.
\r\nAlison Beaver led the Huskies attack with 12 kills and 11 digs while Kerri Smit had 10 kills and 8 digs.
\r\nThe losses drop the X-Women record to 5-12 and they currently sit in a sixth place tie with the Memorial Seahawks with 10 points a piece. The X-Women have three regular season games remaining and are fighting for fifth spot to nab an AUS playoff berth.
\r\nThey will host the Acadia Axewomen (2-14) on Saturday night at 7:00 pm at the StFX Oland Centre and on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm the UPEI Panthers (2-14) will be in town.
