Volleyball X-Women knock off UNB
The volleyball X-Women knocked off the CIS nationally ranked #6 UNB Varsity Reds Sunday afternoon in Fredericton with a 3-1 win.
\r\nThe host Varsity Reds opened up the match with a 25-15 win in the first set, but the X-Women stormed back to take the next three sets with scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-21 to earn their second win of the season.
\r\nPlayer of the Game Katherine Ryan led the X attack with 22 points (19 kills, 2 aces, 1 block and 10 digs) while freshman setter Heather Isenor compiled 38 assists, 8 digs 1 ace and 1 kill. Jessica Nichols, playing in her first match as an X-Woman, was solid with a 52% hitting efficiency, scoring 14 points (11 kills, 2 aces, 1 block and 6 digs). Laura Machowski contributed 8 points, 8 kills and 11 digs and Megan McDonald scored 10 points, 5 kills and 3 aces. Libero Megan Pothier had 9 digs on defense.
\r\nBarb Vriends led the Varsity Reds with 13 points and 10 kills while Erica Hay had 11 points (10 kills and 6 digs). Jillian Blanchard had 11 digs.
\r\nThe X-Women currently hold a 2-7 record and are tied for sixth place overall in the AUS. Their next league game comes at home this Saturday night when the X-Women host the Saint Mary huskies (4-4) at 7:00 pm at the Oland Centre.
