Volleyball Interlock Sweep
The X-Women traveled to Acadia this past weekend to open up their regular season with their interlock competition against some stiff teams from Quebec.
Opening up against CIS ranked #1 University of Montreal, who is heavily favored by most to take home a National Championship, the X-Women lost by a score of 3-1 (25-12, 25-22, 23-25, 25-17). The X-Women were led by Left Side players Laura Machowski (11 points, 8 kills, 2 aces, 1 block), Katherine Ryan (13 points, 9 kills, 3 aces, 1 block) and Megan McDonald (6 points, 5 kills, 1 block).
Friday afternoon saw the Blue & White, in their second tough match of the day battle against University of Laval losing by a score of 3-1 (25-21. 25-18, 23-25, 25-23), with all sets being extremely close. First year left side Katherine Ryan left her mark in this match, showing she has the potential to put up some great numbers, leading the charge with 21 points (19 kills, 2 aces, 12 digs, serve receive of 2.4/3 and a remarkable 48% kill efficiency). Megan Pothier once again stabilized the defense passing a 2.3 / 3 and accumulated 16 digs while rookie setter Heather Isenor gathered 35 assists and 1 block.
4 matches in 36 hours proved to be a challenge for the Blue & White on Saturday as the team lost to McGill, currently ranked #8 in the CIS 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-15) and University of Sherbrooke (25-16, 25-15, 25-10). Against McGill, rookie Stephanie Bullock gathered 7 points (7 kills, 5 digs) and Katherine Ryan had 13 points (12 kills, 1 block) The weekend ended Saturday night with a 3-0 loss to Sherbrooke (25-16, 25-15, 25-10) where Ryan led the team in points with 14 (13 kills, 1 block, 5 digs).
This coming Saturday is the start of the X-Women’s home season as they kick off Saturday at 4:00 (note time change) against the CBU Capers in their 2nd Annual Serve UP A CURE fundraiser match with all of the proceeds going to the Cancer Resource Centre at St. Martha’s Hospital. Come out in Pink to support your X-WOMEN and a very important cause. Sunday, the X-Women battle a young and feisty team from Dalhousie at 1:00 in what is shaping up to be a BIG weekend for the Blue & White.
