October 17, 2007
Oct 17, 2007 - The X-Women volleyball team returned home from the University of New Brunswick Invitational Volleyball Tournament with 3 wins under their belt.\r\n\r\nEntering the tournament without starting middle blocker Andrea Bell, who is recovering from a back injury, the Blue and White began the tournament against Cape Breton University. Just when the team was beginning to gain some momentum, Kenzie VanNistelrooy was sidelined with an ankle injury. With only 1 middle blocker remaining active, the X-Women made some lineup changes and finished the night at 0-2 with losses to both CBU and UNB.\r\n\r\nCBU 3 STFX 0 (25-20, 25-23, 25,-16)\r\nLeading the way for the Blue & White in the loss were first year players Kathleen MacDonald with 8 kills, 2 aces and Catherine Thornton with10 kills, 3 aces. Jenna Singer did a great job of running the offence from the setting position.\r\n\r\nUNB 3 STFX 0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-20)\r\nLaura Machowski led the X-Women in their loss with 8 kills, 3 aces, while Kathleen MacDonald contributed 4 kills, 3 blocks, 1 ace. Once again Jenna Singer showed her versatility from the setting position as she was called upon to set out of the middle due to the team injuries!\r\n\r\nSTFX 3 RMC 0 (25-16, 25-7, 25-16)\r\nSaturday began a new day for the X-Women as they battled RMC and collected their first team win of the season. The injuries continued for the X-Women and the very versatile Jenna Singer was called upon to make a positional change and play middle for the team. Jenna led the squad with 9 kills, 2 blocks, and 2 aces while teammate Catherine Thornton collected 8 kills, 7 aces.\r\n\r\nSTFX 3 UPEI 0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-20)\r\nIn the Consolation Semi-Final, the X-Women battled an AUS opponent, PEI and collected a solid win. The team was led again by Jenna Singer with 9 kills, 3 aces and Catherine Thornton 10 kills, 2 aces. Laura Machowski chipped in with 4 kills, 2 aces\r\n\r\nSTFX 3 STU 0 (25-12, 25-8, 25-19)\r\nSunday morning brought another win for the X-Women as they defeated STU. Laura Machowski led the charge with 7 kills, 4 aces and a solid defensive performance and Catherine Thornton was again solid with11 kills, 2 aces.\r\n\r\nThe team faced much adversity over the course of the weekend as we were plagued with some injuries and players were forced to play in a variety of new positions. Jenna Singer showed her versatility and extreme athleticism as she played a multitude of positions throughout the weekend. Catherine, Kathleen and Laura all had solid consistent contributions for the entire weekend. 1st year Middle Blocker was again called upon to start in the middle and has certainly proved she is able to hold her own against more experienced middle blockers in the conference.\r\n\r\nThe team will head back to training for a couple of weeks now in preparation to open our season on November 2-3 as we travel to UNB & Moncton.
