Panthers and X-Women play to 26-26 draw

Charlottetown, PEI – The STFX X-Women overcame a 19-point deficit at halftime to fight back and tie the UPEI Panthers 26-26 in AUS action Saturday afternoon.

The teams were deadlocked with 10 minutes to go in the game, with neither side able to break the tie.

The Panthers scored two converted tries to get out to a 14-0 lead in the game. Lauren Misener scored 14 minutes in and Emily-Anne MacQuarrie touched down in the 25^th minute.

Misener, the Panthers player of the game, converted both scores.

The X-Women answered back in the 34^th minute as Jessie Penney scored and Katie Murphy kicked the conversion.

Rowan Gallagher gave the Panthers back a comfortable lead, however before the half was over as she scored on a lengthy run, breaking several X tackles. Misener's conversion gave UPEI a 26-7 lead at halftime.

STFX wasted no time getting on the board in the second half as Courtney Gottselig scored three minutes in. Murphy made good on the conversion.

Akwaima Akpan broke through to score STFX's third try of the game in the 58^th minute. Murphy's ensuing conversion cut the Panthers lead to 26-21.

STFX player of the game Jessie Penney scored her second try of the game (unconverted) in the 67^th minute to complete the X comeback and tie the game.

Despite controlling much of the possession in the final 10 minutes of play and pressuring to score, the X-Women were unable to seal the win and settled for the draw.

STFX (3-0-1) will be back in action on Saturday, October 4^th at home when they kick-off in a 2:00 pm Homecoming game against the Acadia Axewomen (3-1-0).

Both the X-Women and Axewomen clinched playoff berths with their weekend results.
