X-Women earn commanding win over Panthers
U SPORTS No. 9 ranked X-Women opened up AUS regular season in commanding fashion, dropping Panthers 45-7
ANTIGONISH, NS - The U SPORTS No. 9 ranked STFX X-Women opened their AUS regular season in commanding fashion, dropping the UPEI Panthers 45-7 on Friday night in front of 500 fans at STFX Stadium.
STFX opened the scoring early, with Jillian Griffith and Jessie Penney both earning tries in the first 15 minutes, with Katie Murphy adding the conversions. The Panthers fought back though, and Rowan Gallagher replied 10 minutes later with a try, with Lauren Miesner converting. STFX finished the half strong, adding another unconverted try by Alison LeBlanc, in the 31st minute.
The second half was all STFX, with Penney earning her second try of the night, while Akwaima Akpan and Van VonMuehldorfer also made it past the try line, before Griffith added her second of the night in the 66th minute. Griffith also added three conversions in the second half as she took home STFX Player of the Game honours, scoring 16 points.
Panthers center Sara Bain was named Player of the Game for the visitors.
The X-Women are on the road next Saturday when they will visit Halifax to tangle with the Saint Mary's Huskies. The Panthers return home for a matchup with the Acadia Axewomen, also on Saturday.
