X-Women pick up fifth win in a row with lopsided 7-1 defeat over visiting Mounties
ANTIGONISH, NS - The STFX X-Women picked up their fifth win in a row with a lopsided 7-1 defeat over the visiting Mount Allison Mounties on Sunday afternoon at the Charles V Keating Centre.
The X-Women, now with a record of 19-5, find themselves tied atop the AUS standings with the UNB REDS. Those two teams collide next Friday, February 6, with STFX playing host.
STFX rookie Jerika Spry picked up Gabriel Pizza Player of the Game honors while scoring her first goal with the Blue and White, while second star Claire Carruthers had a four-point night and is now tied for the most goals in the AUS.
The X-Women potted four unanswered goals in the first period while allowing only four shots on net. STFX defender Kya Moss struck first, wristing a point shot after a pass from Vivian Hinch.
Fellow blueliner MacKenzie Lothian added another three minutes later, also with a shot from the point.
Alexis Perry made it 3-0 with five minutes left in the first, bouncing one off a defender with Carruthers picking up her second helper of the night.
Carruthers notched her 11th goal of the season 6 seconds before intermission, roofing a backhand rebound off the boards.
The Mounties got one back early in the second period, as third star of the night Hailey Simoneau made a great individual rush for the score. STFX replied just before intermission, as Spry knocked in a Kameryn Lahey rebound.
Carruthers added a shorthanded marker early in the third after a takeaway at her blueline turned into a breakaway.
Samantha Morrison closed out the scoring, wristing one high from the low slot after a behind the net pass from Perry.
Silia Gregg made 29 saves in the next for the Mounties, while Jorja Burrows had 13 in the win. Mount Allison is home to the St. Thomas Tommies next Friday, also at 7 p.m.
