X-Women power past Tigers 5-1
X-Women made it a four-point weekend with 5-1 victory over visiting Dalhousie Tigers Saturday night
ANTIGONISH, NS - The STFX X-Women made it a four-point weekend with a 5-1 victory over the visiting Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday night at the Charles V Keating Centre. It's the third win in a row of the USPORTS number 5 ranked X-Women, who trail the AUS leading UNB REDS by one point.
It was end to end action in the first period, with STFX goalie and Gabriel Pizza Player of the Game Jorja Burrows making a big save in the first five minutes to keep things even. Alexis Perry opened the scoring for the Blue and White, tipping home a point shot from Mackenzie Lothian while on the powerplay five minutes later.
The X-Women continued to generate chances in the second period, including a Kya Moss shot off the post in the first five minutes, but Madison King stayed busy in the Dalhousie net. STFX captain Landyn Pitts notched her third goal of the season with five minutes to go in the stanza, wristing a high shot from the faceoff circle after a pass from Tea Pearce.
The Tigers cut the lead in half early in the third period as third star Emma Silvernagle wired a shot from the point through some traffic. Lainey Joyce put the X-Women up 3-1 six minutes later, potting one from the point on the powerplay for her second goal of the weekend.
The physicality picked up in the third, with each side earning trios to the box. Laci Boyd scored her second goal in as many games with two minutes to go, taking a Samantha Morrison pass for a breakaway marker while shorthanded.
Joyce wrapped up the scoring with 20 seconds left, hitting the back of the net with a high shot from the slot.
Burrows picked up the win with a 20 save performance while King and Grace Beer combined for 34 stops on the night for Dalhousie.
The X-Women are on the road next Friday, January 30, when they visit the Mount Allison Mounties. The Tigers return home for a mid-week match up on Wednesday, January 28, with the Saint Mary's Huskies.
