X-Women beat Tigers in shootout
Martinsen’s lone shootout goal and three saves from Oakes were the deciding factors in X-Women's 3-2 shootout win over Tigers
ANTIGONISH, NS - Gabriel Pizza Player of the Game Joanna Martinsen's lone shootout goal and three straight saves from Brookyln Oakes were the deciding factors in the STFX X-Women's 3-2 shootout win over the Dalhousie Tigers on Friday night at the Charles V Keating Centre.
Dalhousie goaltender Grace Beer had 47 saves for the Tigers, picking up second star on the night honors, while Oakes had 20 in the win.
Despite a big 16-5 shot advantage in favour of the X-Women, neither team lit the lamp in the opening 20 minutes. STFX forward Alexis Perry broke in alone while killing a penalty late in the period, but Beer came up with the stop.
Tigers forward Lexie Small opened the scoring while on the same powerplay early in the second, knocking in a close rebound chance from Avery Homes.
X-Women defender and third star Lainey Joyce tied things up four minutes later, firing home a points shot through some traffic, with Isabella Mariano assisting.
Joyce shared the wealth five minutes later, going tape to tape with Ireland McCluskey, who broke in and roofed one for the 2-1 lead.
Dalhousie tied it back up 16 seconds into the third period, as Leah MacSween hit twine off a pass from Abby Larkin. Beer continued her strong play, coming up with two big stops in a row, including one from point blank off the stick of Landyn Pitts at the eight-minute mark.
Oakes had a couple of quick stops a minute later at the other end and stood tall through a late Dalhousie powerplay. The X-Women pressed for the go-ahead goal, but Beer barred the door, and things went to overtime and then the shootout.
The X-Women return to home ice on Saturday, November 8, when they host the Saint Mary's Huskies.
