Laci Boyd scores eventual game-winner early in third period as X-Women edge Tommies 2–1
FREDERICTON, NB - Freshman forward Laci Boyd scored the eventual game-winner early in the third period as the STFX X-Women edged the St. Thomas Tommies 2–1 in a tight AUS women's hockey matchup Saturday afternoon at the Grant-Harvey Centre.
With the win, StFX improved to 6–3–0 on the season, while St. Thomas slips to 5–4–0.
The X-Women opened the scoring at 13:58 of the first period when Kalle Hastman tapped in a rebound off rebound from a feed from an Ashlyn Garnett shot to give the visitors a 1–0 lead.
After a scoreless middle frame, Boyd doubled the advantage midway through the third, converting a rebound after Tommies goaltender Chloe Marshall made a save on a shot from Claire Carruthers at 6:51.
The Tommies pressed hard in the final frame, outshooting the X-Women 10–4, and were rewarded when Tahlia Mallaley cut the lead in half at 12:19. Despite late power-play chances and pulling their goaltender in the final minute, St. Thomas couldn't find the equalizer.
Goaltender Bianca Zak was solid in the STFX crease, turning aside 23 of 24 shots for the win. At the other end, Marshall made 16 saves in the loss.
Boyd earned STFX player of the game honours for her game-winning goal, while Daley's strong two-way play landed her player of the game for St. Thomas.
The X-Women return home next weekend to host Dalhousie on Friday night, November 7th. Puck drop is 7:00 pm at the Charles V. Keating Centre.
